MammoJam Festival
Hey Hon, come on out to the 8x10 Club in Baltimore this Saturday, April 18th for the MammoJam Festival to support local breast cancer prevention, and treatment programs for low income women. This festival is important to me personally as I lost a good friend to breast cancer a few years ago and it's the best way for me to celebrate my friend's life and hopefully raise some $$$ for prevention.
The show starts at 6:30 and features Trombone Shorty, Nelly's Echo, The Grilled Lincolns as well as me and the boys. There will also be 15 local restaurants featured at the festival. Tix are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. A VERY worthy cause!

15 Years of Night of 100 Elvises!
This Friday and Saturday, December 5th and 6th you will find me for the 15th year in a row at the infamous Night of 100 Elvises in lovely Baltimore, Maryland. Yes, hon, be there or be square! This is the most fun weekend of the year for me - well, okay, there was that weekend in August that was pretty incredible.... Anyway, let your Elvis freak flag fly and I promise you that a kick ass time will be had. I have had such a blast doing this show - and there have been some moments to remember such as when Theresa's pastie fell off mid-dance... oh, the camera flashes could have lit up New York City - or me smashing someone's face in the Elvis cake - I just don't remember who... So come on out and raise the roof cuz we are raising cash for John's Hopkins. A million thanks, hugs and kisses to Carole Carroll, Craig Curley, Walter and all the other volunteers that put this shindig together. Y'all rock!!

Seven Out of Ten Songs Completed!
I headed back up to NYC the day after Thanksgiving for a little shopping with one of my best pals, Pat and her daughter, Valentine. We hit one of my fav stores ABC Home and Carpet and visited Santa so I could thank him for sending me what I asked him for last Christmas... he truly does deliver!
I headed over to Blake's that evening and again Saturday morning and we wrapped up three more tunes - Not For Real, Disappear and the working title, The Grass is Always Greener. Blake makes me laugh waaaaay too much - but I love it, and I just don't think there is anything repeatable in this diary.
I really can't wait for you to hear this album. I'm so excited and proud of it and we have written all the tunes this time. It truly is an amazing process, songwriting - to see an idea or actual event that happened to you come to permanent life in a song is quite spectacular. It's even more amazing when people connect to the song.

Janine Starts Singin'!
Driving up to NYC is not a bad drive at all - I mean just the thought of going to New York is exciting but going to start recording vocals is just fun and scary at the same time. I arrived in the big city around 3:00 and hit my pal, Michelle's apartment, hung out a bit and then jumped on the subway to the Village and Blake's studio. We got two songs in the can - Only One in Love and It Should Be Me - yep, we're redoing that tune and it sounds so kick ass I can't stand it. After Blake and I wrapped things up I decided to go visit Michelle during her gig at the Any Way Cafe out in Brooklyn near Coney Island. Oh, but the train that I wanted to take doesn't run on the weekend, huh? So I get on the suggested D Train to Coney Island. I get off thinking I'll hop a cab cuz it's close by wait - a $15 town car ride and much further than I thought - but I arrive safely. I stroll in the joint which is packed and find a seat at the bar and immediately settle in with three new friends who buy me beers and calamari. It is a good night! Michelle has me sit in for a tune which was fun as always. We beat it around 2:30 a.m. We figure our sweet heads will hit the pillow around 3:30 a.m. but the cops who closed the FDR for some reason have changed our plans and after a lame backup we dissolve into bed around 4 a.m. Later that morning I woke up around 10 a.m. and dragged my tired self outta bed. I had a lovely time driving down Riverside Drive - NYC in the fall certainly is beautiful. I get to Blake's a little after 12:00. We hit this very yummy organic bakery, Birdbath down the street and I had a berry scone. Man, I wish DC had places like this instead of all the chain "bakeries." Anyway, we finished the vocals for Just Kiss Her, I did a little grocery shopping and headed on back to DC. Not bad for being in New York for a little over 24 hours.

Dear Family, Fans and Friends:
As you may know, I am in the throes of recording my third CD (all original material this time)! My good friend, guitarist, and co-writer, Max Evans, and I are collaborating on all the songs and expecting it to be an amazing record. Work began this past June in New York City at Engine Company Records with producer Blake Morgan. Blake has worked with Lenny Kravitz, Lesley Gore, and Phil Ramone, among others – impressive, huh? You can check out his website for more info at Engine Company Records.
In order to make this project the best it can be, I am adopting an approach to producing a record that has worked for other independent artists. I am asking you to make a contribution to fund the production of this record in exchange for some special goodies. There are different levels of contribution, and as a contributor, I will keep you updated on our progress via posts to the Diary on the JWB website. We hope to have all sorts of interesting, behind the scenes tidbits such as when brilliant ideas strike, groupies show up or where the best pizza can be found in NYC at 3 a.m.!
The record will cost approximately 20,000 bucks, and we're hoping to raise as much of that as possible. These contributions will be used to pay for studio time, musicians, hookers for musicians (they wish!), artwork, photography, graphics, reproduction, and promotion, promotion, promotion. All without a record company – yep, we can do this together!
Whether or not you choose to contribute, please know I am sincerely moved by the outpouring of love and support I receive from y'all. If it weren't for you, I would not have had the courage to begin this next project. Yeehaw!
» Heck Yes!, I would like to participate in your recording project.

Janine jams with Chuck Brown and FCC Commissioner!
FCC Fines Broadcasters $12.5 Million
By: Aoife McCarthy
April 16, 2007 11:29 AM EST
After waiting for more than a month for the final settlement to be announced, the Federal Communications Commission released the final details of the payola settlement Friday morning.
According to the settlement, four of the country's largest broadcasters are paying the government $12.5 million in fines in response to allegations that they accepted money and gifts to play certain artists, a practice known as "payola."
This is the largest collective fine in the history of U.S. broadcasting. Officials declined to say when Clear Channel Communications, CBS Radio, Entercom Communications and Citadel Broadcasting will pay.
On top of the fines, the radio companies voluntarily agreed to launch a new program for independent artists.
This local artist showcase commits the industry to 4,200 hours of airplay across the four companies between 6 a.m. and midnight. Adelstein said the pledge represented a commitment from both the radio stations and the broadcast companies to demonstrate the desire to put payola behind them.
In addition, companies are supposed to maintain a database that identifies any item they receive from a recording company worth more than $25; they are also going to establish a payola hotline to report violations. The companies also are required to appoint compliance officials in the home offices as well as people in local offices throughout the country to address the issue.
Peter Gordon, founder of the independent label Thirsty Ear Recording, said this represents a major effort between two sectors of the music business that have not gotten along well before. "This is a chance to embrace each other's cultures," he added.
The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Inc. has been working with FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein on payola problems for several years, along with two of the music industry's unions, American Federation of Musicians and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Academy lobbyist Daryl Friedman said he organized a letter-writing campaign, in which people sent 40,000 letters to the FCC complaining about payola. Two years ago he had 100 recording artists, such as Gloria Estefan, meet with the FCC. Last year, "American Idol" alum Kelly Clarkson set up a makeshift recording booth at the Capitol and jammed with eight members of Congress to raise awareness of importance of the situation.
To thank Adelstein for his efforts, Friedman brought the "godfather of go-go," Chuck Brown and independent artist Janine Wilson to meet with the commissioner on Wednesday. Brown brought his guitar, and the meeting quickly resulted in an impromptu jam session with Adelstein on his harmonica.
